Hi, I’m the Broke-Traveler. I’m a petroleum engineer from New Orleans whose two passions are finance and traveling. I started this journey a couple of years ago when I started working for a travel app startup named TOURED. Ever since I graduated from college I’ve been traveling as much as I can so when I stumbled upon an article online about a local travel app that uses an individual’s preferences to curate travel experiences for them, I knew I wanted to be apart of the team. During this time I also stumbled upon an article about a guy my age that was on track to retire at the age of 35. That’s right, 35. My interest was piqued. I always thought I was financially ahead of my peers. I had a financial adviser and I was contributing to my 401K and Roth IRA. Hell I even had disability insurance. I thought I was mature af. Even my financial guy said I was ahead of most people my age. I was always a good saver but there’s so much more to it. I eventually realized how much I was doing wrong. There were a lot of basic personal finance concepts that I just wasn’t aware of. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Meanwhile I decided to leave TOURED and focus on my own travel blog. I wanted to build something of my own and blog my traveling and show people some cool places and itineraries, as well as show them how to travel hack so they could afford to take more vacations. Then I started listening to one of the best podcasts, Listen Money Matters. Andrew & Matt do such a great job of educating about basic personal finance that it inspired me. I wanted to share what I’ve learned from them and my mistakes and build a website myself. So I decided to combine my two passions. Broke-Traveler was born.
I’m not a financial expert. And I’m not a world traveler. Not yet anyway. But I want to share what I have learned on my financial journey and hopefully you’ll learn something you didn’t know. Maybe it’ll help you retire early or take extra vacations. Maybe you’ll learn about a great restaurant in NYC or beach in Maui. Maybe I can inspire you to build a blog. This journey of mine is just beginning. I plan on writing a lot of articles and posting a lot of trips. Hopefully you’ll stick around and keep reading. If you have a recommendation, a question, or want an article about your vacation posted on my blog, please email me (Broke_Traveler@yahoo.com) or fill out the form below.
